Helen Louise Hulick Beebe

(1908, Easton, Pennsylvania – 1989, Pennsylvania)
Educator

She was a teacher and pioneer of auditory-verbal therapy. In 1938 she was summoned by the Los Angeles court as a witness in a trial. She showed up wearing a pair of pants. Judge Arthur S. Guerin suspended the hearing and ordered her to come back in more feminine clothing. The next time, she came back in pants, and unleashed the ire of the judge who threatened to punish her for contempt of the court. Hulick was not intimidated, returned wearing the pants again and was sentenced to 5 days in prison: “ I hope this can help women free them forever by those who do not want us free to wear what we want ”. Her lawyer took the matter to the Court of Appeal, which sanctioned the right of women to wear trousers even in a court of law.
