Marilyn Monroe aka Norma Jeane Mortenson Baker
(Los Angeles, 1926 – Los Angeles, 1962)
She was one of the most famous actresses in the history of cinema, well known also for her dramatic personal story. Often celebrated for her physical appearance, Monroe was a nonconforming woman and in some respects also revolutionary. In 1950s it was an honour to perform at Mocambo nightclub. But these were years of infamous racial discrimination and Ella Fitzgerald, despite having already demonstrated that she had one of the most beautiful voices in the world, due to her skin color could not perform on the stage of the exclusive club. Monroe contacted the owner and told him that she wanted Fitzgerald to perform in his club: if he accepted her request, she would book a table every night. The proposal was accepted and this allowed Fitzgerald to launch her career. In 1954 Monroe founded her own film production company against unsatisfactory contracts from Hollywood Studios.
